Derek Wheals, born in Durban in 1963, is the CEO of Tri-Star Group Holdings and Managing Director of Kale Developments. After matriculating from King Edward VII School in 1980, he obtained a BSc in Quantity Surveying from the University of Natal in 1986. His early career included roles at Stocks & Stocks (Natal), Bovis Construction in the UK, and Bartlett Construction in Johannesburg. In 1997, Derek co-founded Tri-Star with Billy McNeil, leading the company for over two decades, transforming it into a prominent national construction group, specializing in new builds, renovations, and development management across various sectors.

A sports enthusiast, Derek particularly enjoys golf. He is married with two children.
